Red Wine from the Atlas Mountains

Area of Production

1.064 acresin the commune of Benchicao, in the department of Medea, 80 km south of Algiers. At an altitude of 1300 m, this area was founded in 1840 and has since been enlarged. Here, at elevations greater than 1300 meters, luxuriant vineyards sprawl over the plateau of the Nador and the surrounding slopes. A mixture of clay and sandy terrain along with rugged winters invariably followed by hot dry summers give rise to an October harvest, which consistently produces high quality wines. Rainfall is 600 mm per year, with snow in winter.

Geology

The cultivation of grapes for wine making in this area
Reached its peak in the 19th century and started producing renowned prize winners as far back as 1885. The mountains of MEDEA are nestled between the Blidean ATLAS to the north and the Cretecean Chains of Berrougahia to the south. The soft sandstone of the Miocene period, after decomposition, has given sandy soils which account for the fame of the wines of the Coteaux de Medea.

Grape Varieties

Black Varieties: 40% Grenache, 25% Cinsault, 15% Carignan, 10% Syrah, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Vinification

Manually harvested and de-stalked with a long maceration using natural yeasts.

Maturation

Blended and matured in oak casks.

Sensory Qualities

Ruby red, with an oaky, floral nose. Wild fruits on the palate, harmonious and subtle. A Jury Prize Gold Medal Winner at the Montreal Wine Expo 1998, it is a very intriguing red wine. It captured the attention and appreciation of the judges amidst 1700 other entries. A definite mood setter. It enlivens the atmosphere of any occasion and enhances the flavor of any meal.
