History

Named after the vestiges left by the ancient Romans, Chateau Romain and the wines of the Zaccar region have been appreciated and lauded by international travelers and dignitaries for centuries. In Paris in 1896, the wines of Zaccar were classified as the best of Algeria. In 1948, Chateau Romain was presented to members of the United Nations as a top-quality wine.

Area of Production

The 760 acres of the vineyard area are situated on the south-east facing slopes of Mount Zaccar, at an altitude of between 500 and 800 metres around the town of Miliana, 120 km from Algiers.

Geology

The soil is heavy, red or grey chalky clay.

Climate

Continental, with dry hot summers and cold winters with snowfall lasting 20 days. The region receives an average of 900 mm of rain per year.

Grape Varieties
Black Varieties:
50% Grenache, plus Carignan, Cinsault, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and less than 3% Alicante Bouschet.

Viticulture

Mainly gobelet with 4 or 5 canes pruned to 2 buds. Vineyard work is done by hand, due to the slope of the land. A very old vineyard, benefiting from the application of organic manure. The yields are less than 50hl/ha.

Vinification

Manual harvesting, with de-stalking. The varieties are fermented together.

Sensory Qualities

Good body, with more than 12% alcohol. The Pinot Noir and the Syrah give a fine bouquet and suppleness. The wines are of good colour, fleshy, and often with the aroma of raspberries.
