Coteaux De Mascara
Red Wine from the Atlas Mountains

History

From ancient times, winemaking has occupied an important place in this region. In 1858, the wines obtained their first awards in the Exposition de Paris. Ever since, a long succession of awards has confirmed their renown throughout the world.

Area of Production

The vineyard area is situated 350 km west of Algiers, covering 3100 ha, divided between the zones of Mascara, El Bordj, Ain-Fares, Selatna, and Beni-Chougrane, at an altitude of between 500 and 900 meters. The climate is hot and dry in summer, with a cold winter with snowfall.

The Soil

The breakdown of Pliocene sandstone has given a red or yellow sand which provides the vines with excellent conditions for growth and for the maturity of the grapes.

Grape Varieties
Black Varieties: In order of importance - Grenache, Cinsault, Morastel, Mourvedre, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, with Alicante Bouschet at less than 10% of the total.

Viticulture

Mostly in goblet with 2 or 3 canes, pruned to 2 buds. All vineyard work is carried out by hand, because of the slope of the ground, with the addition of organic manure. There is little need for spraying because of the dry climate.

Vinification

Manually harvested, with de-stalking. The varieties are fermented together, using natural yeast and temperature control.

The Wines

The great wines of Mascara are distinguished but robust and well-structured. Of good colour, they are high in alcohol, reaching 14%. All Algerian wines delight the palate with deep berry flavors and the aroma of roses and raspberries.
