Domaine El Bordj Red Wine from the Atlas Mountains |
|
Geology The plateau of El-Bordj is covered with sands produced by the decomposition of Pliocene sandstone. These sands, which give a reddish soil, low in minerals, but deep and cool, enable the vine to achieve all it's potential. Grape Varieties The principal grape varieties are of the Southern French type, dominated by Grenache and Carignan, but also Cinsault, Mourvedre, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Alicante Bouschet is present at a limit of 3%. The local varieties (Farranah, El Maoui and Tizourine) constitute less than 5%. Viticulture Planted on the slopes exposed to the south-east, gobelet with 2 to 3 canes maximum. The average age is about 45 years for the principal varieties, and between 15 and 20 years for the new introductions such as Cabernet and Syrah. Vinification Manual harvesting with mechanical de-stalking. Natural yeasts and a long fermentation. Maturation The blend is made in the winery, followed by maturation in oak casks for between 8 and 12 months. Sensory Qualities Like all the wines of the region of Mascara,
the wines of El-Bordj are dry, robust, of good colour, and high in alcohol.
These wines are well structured, and their bouquet full and generous.
They count among the most prestigious wines of Algeria. They age well
and gain much in harmony and finesse over many years. Sumptuous and smooth,
El-bordj is the best of the "Mascara" wines. A truly great companion
when you are in the mood for celebrating a particular moment in your life
or simply enjoying a good meal. It is delightful with salad, fish or meats. |
