Area of Production The region of Tlemcen is situated 500 km west of Algiers. The vines, covering 1500 ha, are situated on the mountains at an altitude of between 600 and 800 metres, the climate is cool and dry. The cultivation of grapes for wine making in this area dates back to the ancient Phoenician trading settlements, and has always played an important part in the region's economy. The vineyards form a patchwork of small plots separated by rows of cherry, apricot or prune trees. A treasure of centuries old lines of grapes can be found in these small orchards. The Tlemcen area is picturesque and varied. Within a few kilometers, one can go from barren mountains to Atlas cedar covered hilltops, to the narrow vales of the cascading Ourit, which leads to the riverbed of the Oued Chouly. This topography gives rise to the micro-climate well suited to the cultivation of the high quality vineyards nestled on the north face of the Mont De Tlemcen. Soils Sandstone, mixed with marl, and chalky in certain areas. Grape Varieties Grenache, Carignan, Mouvedre, Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, with an appreciable percentage of white varieties, such as Clairette, Farranah, Merseguera, and Macabeo. Viticulture Mainly gobelet, with 3 to 4 canes, pruned to 2 buds. Vinification Manual harvesting, with de-stalking. A slow fermentation using natural yeasts. Sensory Qualities The combination of soil, climate and grape varieties gives wines which are fresh, balanced, and of good structure, with a good ruby colour and a remarkable bouquet of red fruits. At around 12.5% alcohol, these wines can develop their maximum tasting qualities. Subtle and generous, this ruby colored gem of a wine takes added smoothness with age. Coteaux De Tlemcen is light yet richly flavorful and enhances the enjoyment of every course. Whether on its own or from soup to nuts, Tlemcen will warm your heart. |
